Since the 1930s The Cannes Film Festival has been the most prestigious and well known international film festival. Its selection process is highly selective and its exclusivity is unparralled. Filmmakers of all nationalities flock to the Palais des Festivals with the hopes of being the next Cecile B. Demille, Fellini, or Tarantino. “Cannes must be open to new ideas, while remaining faithful to its past, of course,” said Cannes Director Thierry Frémaux. ”Diversity can only enrich it. That’s what makes the Festival de Cannes our festival.” Given the diverse backgrounds of New York Film Academy’s students and instructors, it’s no wonder we’re well represented in this year’s festival.
NYFA editing instructor, Rodney Ascher, is promoting his documentary ROOM 237 as part of the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes. Rodney’s film has already been picked up by IFC for distribution. Rodney and Michel Gondry’s new project were the only US made films to be included in the Director’s Fortnight. Eva Gardos, NYFA LA directing instructor and editor of the Peter Bogdnovich film Mask, will be setting up her next project there. Andrew Vajna, super producer of Total Recall, Nixon, Evita, and Die Hard With a Vengence is producing.
Several NYFA grads from all over the world will be screening their work in the Short Film Corner:
- Simon Hung, Sept 2009 MFA, Mr. Monster
